about the artist Aparicio's international upbringing marked him for life as he continues to travel around the world in search of inspiration. After earning his Bachelor's of Arts from the University of Arizona, he moved to Paris to dedicate himself to painting. While originally inspired by the Impressionist painters, his painting view was forever changed as he discovered the Abstract Expressionist technique of non-representational automatism and gestural mark-making. Aparicio occupies himself with a wide range of activities from the practice of tattooing, to interior design, to Thai massage/body works. Starting Ashtanga yoga in Abidjan, Cote d'Ivoire, he began to see parallels between the process of painting and the journey of self-awareness in the yoga practice (primarily Yin yoga and meditation). Today he holds group workshops where he guides fellow artists and non-artists alike on a journey of self-discovery through collective painting. Aparicio sees the process of mark-making as a useful tool in expanding your creative limitations and challenging your preconceived notions on art and life. Each mark communicates to the artist and the viewer as the process is turned into a visual meditation; a dance of creation, destruction, and recreation that mimics the cycles that we find in every corner of existence.
about the art Aparicio is inspired by the psychological phenomenon of pareidolia, where the mind interprets visual stimuli as important information (i.e. recognisable images). The best examples of this being the man in the moon, or Jesus on a piece of toast. One can see various forms interacting, just as Leonardo DaVinci did on the variations of stone walls, clouds, or rusty surfaces. His marks mimic the qualities of rust, catching the paint from his fluttering brushstrokes onto the threaded surface of the canvas like rustic pixels. As the layers build up, a cloud of forms transform and mix with gestural marks, creating a dream-scape where each viewer may see something new as in a Rorschach's test or be guided by the poetic or playful titles. He never starts with an preconceived idea of what he will paint, but rather, empties his mind and fills the canvas plane with action that sparks his creative spirit. The process of painting is a sacred act where the artist communicates with himself, the medium, and the subject; the subject being the dynamics aroused from his own pre-conscious. The main interest in this art, is the spectrum of recognisable form and how we interpret it as a creator and as a viewer. Whereas the surrealist used psychic automatism to inspire depictions of dreams, Aparicio aims to paint the dream as it forms.
workshops: visual meditation Aparicio has offered group painting workshops since 2014 with either a festive ambience or as a meditative journey including body awareness through yoga and pranayama breathing exercises. There is no artistic experience required for the participants as he will guide the group in the collective painting. If you are interested in this experience with some friends, you can contact him directly to organise an event, or keep an eye on the news on facebook for upcoming events. He will be travelling to Vietnam to explore these workshops more extensively in a painting residency and the New Art Space Foundation in Hue. He will be holding these events and gathering new inspiration throughout the first half of 2018 in South-East Asia.
